SimplyThick was founded by John Holahan in 2001. John graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Minnesota. From there John took a job at Kelco, which is a thickener company. While working there, a co-worker's mother was in hospice and refused to drink anything with a starch thickener. From there he was introduced to xanthan gum, which gave his co-worker more time with her mother. John then began his MBA program at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He wanted to explore the possibility of creating a better tasting liquid using xanthan gum thickener. His prototype gained some serious traction in the local healthcare industry, and upon graduating in 2001 he founded SimplyThick.
