Omega-3 fatty acids are important for overall health and are especially important in a developing child’s brain. Many pregnant women will bulk up on their omega-3 fatty acids during their pregnancy to ensure their child develops properly. But this important nutrient is also necessary for adults and their health as well. These fatty acids can be found in foods and supplements.

Learning how they benefit the body is important to your health.

  • Cardiovascular Health – Omega-3 fatty acids are important for primary and secondary heart health. The American Heart Association recommends eating oily fish containing omega-3 fatty acids at least twice a week. Fish in this category are tuna, salmon, mackerel, trout, herring, and sardines. There are other foods that are rich in omega 3s if you aren’t interested in the fish diet, which are discussed below.
  • Brain Health – There are also studies showing that omega-3s are also responsible for preventing brain disease like dementia.   • Bipolar Depression – Another exciting benefit from omega-3s is in the health of your brain and bipolar depression. There are many studies showing that this disorder is minimized when the blood is transporting omega 3s throughout the body.
  • Eye Health – DHA, one of the omega-3 fatty acids is an amazing proponent for eye health. It is used during development and it can reduce the effects of macular degeneration and glaucoma.
  • Asthma – Eating a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids can decrease the likelihood of suffering from asthma in childhood and as an adult. It has also been linked to improved breathing for those suffering from respiratory ailments like COPD and emphysema.
