Slim Figures and Healthy Hearts: The French Connection

French, they say is the language of diplomacy. But whether or not France has the best diplomats in the world is subject to debate. What can't be debated, however, is that the country has excellent food and wine. No one will contest that. But despite the unmistakably rich French sauces and puff pastries, the French are not an obese lot. What's more, they're really not frequent candidates for cardiovascular disease, at least the diseases of the heart are not as prevalent as in North America. That's the French Paradox. So given all the good food and wine they consume, why are their hearts in good shape?

The mystery? Resveratrol - Benefits of Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a substance commonly found in red wine. More specifically, the grapes from which wine is made contain resveratrol; its role is to help the grape plant fight fungi. The highest resveratrol concentration has been associated with Muscadine grapes. Their dense skins and numerous seeds are where resveratrol is "housed."

In 1963, resveratrol was discovered as part of Asian folk medicine but it was in 1992 that it was discovered also in red wine. Given its beneficial effects, people started promoting daily drinking of red wine with dinner, suggesting that a four-ounce glass was the ideal daily amount. The truth is, you can't get enough resveratrol from red wine and a resveratrol supplement is the best form.

Resveratrol: a natural Antibiotic

Many opinions have sprung up regarding the health benefits of resveratrol, but one fact that is firmly established is that it possesses antioxidant qualities. The Oxford Journal and the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology are two examples of publications that have released positive reports about resveratrol. In the case of grape plants, it offers protection from fungal and viral attacks and acts as a shield against the ravages of oxidative stress.

Numerous antioxidants have been discovered and they are credited as the elements that breathe color into plants (notably fruits and vegetables). This is why nutritionists and dieticians say that we should consume fruits and vegetables with dark or pronounced colors. The more greens, oranges, reds, and yellows we include in our diet, the healthier our bodies will become. A high and regular consumption of fruits and vegetables provide us with the necessary antioxidants to fight health problems relating to the heart, digestive tract and cellular system.

Resveratrol is one of the many antioxidants found in nature. To think that taking only resveratrol would be sufficient for optimal health is an erroneous notion. Resveratrol supplements should be taken in conjunction with other sources of antioxidants for optimal benefit.

Resveratrol's Other Benefits

Resveratrol has other distinct benefits: one, it can inhibit the transformation of normal cells into cancerous cells; this is why researchers have called it an anti-mutagen. Two, resveratrol is also a natural anti-inflammatory agent.

A good majority of diseases like cancer, diabetes or arthritis start either with an infection or an inflammation that is chronic. Prescription or over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine cannot be taken long term because of potentially serious side effects. The safer alternative therefore is to take natural anti-inflammatory agents, mostly sourced from plants. These natural substances will not produce side effects (whether moderate or serious) even when taken long term.
It is therefore logical to think that because resveratrol is a natural anti-inflammatory substance, it can help people who are diagnosed with cardiovascular problems, cancer and other diseases to overcome some of their symptoms.

Other benefits of resveratrol include:

  • Relief for symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and delaying of the deterioration process associated with this disease. This particular benefit is still under considerable study so no conclusive evidence is available, although some researchers who have studied resveratrol for a long time are convinced of its capability to help ward off the damaging effects of Alzheimer's;
  • Prevention of the common cold or influenza. Again, more studies are required to establish this benefit for humans. It has however been proven on rats and their cells.
While more experiments are needed to prove the effectiveness of resveratrol supplements, there is certainly no harm in taking them as part of your dietary program only because they are 100% natural and hence pose no danger to your health. People who regularly take resveratrol supplements have reported no adverse effects.

Resveratrol: Anti-Aging Nutrient - Increase Vigor and Stamina

People are either drinking more red wine or taking resveratrol supplements because of its capability to delay premature aging and to inject more vigor and stamina into cell life. By preventing oxidative stress to our cardiovascular health, our heart is stronger and able to resist free radicals. It is also an immune system enhancer.

Resveratrol not only can protect the heart, it can also protect the brain and central nervous system, thanks to its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier.

To summarize the benefits of resveratrol:

  • Offers a protective shield against free radicals
  • Slows down the spread and metastasis of cancer cells (more particularly prostate cancer)
  • Stabilizes blood pressure
  • Maintains cardiovascular strength and helps blood vessels pump blood more efficiently
  • Boosts your immune system
  • Relieves symptoms of Alzheimer's disease or helps to prevent rapid deterioration of brain deficiencies
