Part I: Comparing Tibetan Goji Berries and Wolfberries

Fact # 2: The seeds of the Goji berries from Tibet were brought to China and then harvested. Those who grew it in China called it the Wolfberry. While the Wolfberry is a healthy berry, its health benefits can be disputed especially if it has not been certified as having organic origins.

This certification can be difficult to obtain in light of the lack of controls in Chinese farming practices that have been going on for generations. Restrictions covering the use of pesticides, herbicides and DDT are not clearly defined for Chinese farmers. Botanists all agree that repetitive planting can deplete the soil of essential minerals. This lack of mineral nutrients in turn causes a low-grade quality product, regardless of the similarity in the climates of Tibet and China.

Fact # 3: Regions in Tibet where the Goji berry is grown are characterized by pristine and pure conditions. Some consumers are not aware that there is still some spraying involved.

When the phrase “wild-craft” is used, it implies that plants are allowed to grow without the use of herbicides and pesticides, and therefore grow naturally; that is they grow wild in the truest sense. This is where the Goji berry comes to light. The Goji berry varieties that grow in the strip of land along the Tibetan and Mongolian region or corridor benefit from this wild and natural condition, especially the ones that are found in Tibet.

Note: The land area occupied by Tibet (now China) is rich in minerals. It enjoys a climate that promotes the growth and spread of Goji berries – berries that the Tibetan population has thrived on. Tibetans think of the Goji berry as a nourishing and nurturing food and medicine – they see it as “happy” nourishment.

For centuries past and up to the present day, the Goji berry from Tibet has been a “regular feature” of medical practice by Tibetan doctors. Even Chinese doctors have long acknowledged the wonderful capabilities of herbs and tinctures. These herbs and tinctures serve as the foundation or basis in the manufacturing of many drugs and supplements today. These studies led Ronald L. Prior to conclude that “the ORAC measure may help define the dietary conditions needed to prevent tissue damage.” He is coordinating this research with Guohua (Howard) Cao, James Joseph, and Barbara Shukitt-Hale at the Boston Center.

The damage caused by oxygen free radicals can no longer be disputed. Free radicals are responsible for several health problems and disorders that consequently are triggered by aging wear and tear, cardiovascular disease and cancer.
