4 Common Skin Care Myths Debunked
There are few health and beauty tips that fall victim to more misinformation than skincare. Below are a few urban myths about skin debunked:
- You must cleanse-tone-moisturize: FALSE. Using a pH balanced cleanser will replace the need for toners and moisturizers as pH balanced skin produces its own natural moisture. In fact, many toners will make your skin feel tight and dry and moisturizers can act as a glue causing debris and toxins to stick to your skin.
- Your skin type is for life: FALSE. Your skin type can change many times throughout your life, becoming more dry and oily through seasons, environments and hormone changes.
- Daily sun protection is only needed in sunny regions: FALSE. No matter where you are in the globe, if you are exposed to the sun’s rays for more than 15 minutes in a day, sunscreen is for you. This includes people who spend time in a car or by a window, because UVA rays do penetrate glass and can cause skin damage.
- Wearing makeup with SPF means no need for sunscreen: FALSE. Since SPF only blocks UVB rays, this protection alone leaves your skin vulnerable to UVA rays, which are the ones associated with deep radiation damage such as wrinkles. Plus, unless you are covering all of your sun-exposed skin with makeup, you are not protecting your skin from the harmful effects of sun exposure. Applying a sunscreen that blocks both UVB and UVA rays is the best way to protect your skin.
