What is Omega 3?
This study involved looking at many different scientific trials into omega 3 that have taken place in the recent past, combining the data and results in what is called a ‘meta-analysis’ to try to make some broad conclusions as to the effects of omega 3 supplements on a large scale. It is also a technique used to discover new effects that would otherwise be missed from studying a smaller sample. The results of the analysis indicated some new findings in the health of your heart and specifically the vitality of your blood vessels.
What is Omega 3?
We are all familiar with the benefits of omega 3, which we can obtain from taking good quality fish oil supplements or a krill oil supplement, however there are many sources from meats and fish as well as those of vegetarian origin. This fatty acid has been linked to heart health since the 1970s as well as having purported benefits for the brain, vision and normal development. In essence, omega 3 fatty acids has a benefit on many organs in the body, being a substance that is used in many bodily processes and in fact plays a critical role in normal metabolism – how we produce energy to live!
Omega 3 Improves Heart Health
As well as there being evidence for omega 3 reducing the risks of cancer, depression and joint problems, it also protects the heart in many different ways. It may reduce the risk of thrombosis, reduce blood pressure and improve heart rate and fat levels in the blood. The way that it rejuvenates the condition of blood vessels has only recently been uncovered as a result of the Australian meta-analysis, which was published in the prestigious British Journal of Nutrition. By combining the results of ten separate scientific studies and performing statistical testing on them together, it was found that the groups taking omega 3 supplements exhibited improvements in pulse-wave velocity and arterial compliance which are both clinical indicators of the stiffness of arteries. Increased arterial stiffness is something that occurs with age, but can also be influenced by poor diet, lack of exercise and smoking. A study published in the same journal indicated that in order for your heart to benefit from omega 3, you should be taking at least 250mg of a good quality supplement, as well as maintaining a good diet and getting plenty of cardiovascular exercise to keep your heart in good shape.
