Its rhizome, Turmeric, has been widely used in the indigenous healthsystem of India (Ayurveda), and is also extensively used as a spice and coloring agent in food. Turmeric beneficial effects have been attributed mainly to its curcuminoids: curcumin, bisdemethoxy curcumin; and demethoxy curcumin, the major compounds responsible for imparting the bright orange-yellow color.
