Passion Flower in DC Stress Plus: Passion flower (Passiflora incarnata) is a perennial vine native to the southeastern regions of North America. Other names for passion flower include maypop, granadilla, passion vine, and apricot vine. This plant was named for the passion of Christ The passion flower contains numerous flavonoids, fatty acids and sugars. It may also contain some diuretic compounds. The plant also has some antihypertensive chemicals, which include quercetin and rutin. It is the alkaloids and flavonoids that have a tranquilizing effect (including mild sedative and anti-anxiety effects) and give it its popularity among those that wish to have a "natural" tranquilizer.
The flavonoids in passion flower have a particularly anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory effect as well. In studies conducted since the 1930's, its means of action has been found to be different than that of most of the sedative drugs (sleeping pills), thus making it a non-addictive herb to promote relaxation. Passion flower has a long history of use among Native Americans. Today, Passion flower is mainly used in the United States and Europe to relieve anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia. It is also recommended for the relief of nausea caused by nervousness or anxiety. It works by slowing the pulse, decreasing arterial tension, and quieting respiration and pulmonary blood pressure.
Passion flower also decreases muscle activity that can play a part in stress-related muscle spasms. Passionflower has been used traditionally for menstrual pain and diarrhea.
Stress Plus contains Valerian
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis,) is a perennial flowering plant, with heads of sweetly scented pink or white flowers. Valerian's rhizome and root are the medicinal part of this herb. Valerian contains volatile oils; it is the volatile oils from valerian roots that contain the active ingredients. Valerian acts as a pain reliever, antispasmodic, sedative, and calming agent. As a mild tranquilizer and sleep aid, valerian may be an effective herb for dealing with temporary feelings of anxiety, nervousness or insomnia. Valerian relaxes, treats insomnia, nervous tension and pain. It has been shown to strengthen the heart, lower blood pressure, help with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), menstrual cramps and muscle spasms.
Valerian shortens the amount of time it takes to fall asleep as well as improve the quality of sleep that results, by blocking some nerve impulses from reaching the brain. Valerian is both safe and gentle, so it is a safe alternative to Valium and other tranquilizers. Valerian has been found to strengthen the heart and can sometimes reduce high blood pressure, if it is caused by stress and anxiety. One least known effects of Valerian is its ability to promote menstruation and problems with the female menstrual cycle, particularly scanty periods. Valerian has been classified as generally recognized as safe for food use in the United States.
Side effects from valerian are rare but can include headache, muscle spasm, heart palpitations, dizziness, gastric distress, sleeplessness, and confusion. Large doses are known to cause withdrawal symptoms when stopped and those with liver disease are advised not to use valerian. Do not take during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Valerian should not be used in large doses or for an extended time.
