Pure MACA Extract Supplement - Natural Aphrodisiac

The Benefits of Maca Root

The benefits of Maca Root have been known for years. If you've ever traveled to Bolivia or Peru, you may have heard the locals talk about the Maca root (scientific name: (Lepidium meyenii). Maca belongs to the root vegetable family and has been called an aphrodisiac by many. It is also described as an energy enhancer.

Maca Root and the Central Nervous System

The Maca root supplements may help to stabilize the central nervous system, thanks to certain substances which include: macamides (identified as a booster of sexual drive), glucosinolates (organic compounds that contain sulphur and carbon), uridine (acts as an anti-depressant but more studies are needed to prove this, and malic acid (an organic compound that gives unripe fruits that sharp and tart taste). Maca root supplements also contains oils such as phenyl acetonitrile and benzaldehyde. Exactly how the Maca root works on the central nervous system is not firmly established, nor does it have a direct bearing on hormones as researchers say that it does not influence the blood content of hormones like testosterone. What has been established so far is that the Maca Root contains alkaloids, steroids, tannins, saponins, and cardiotonic glycosides.

Men and Women Can Enjoy Benefits of Maca Root Extract Supplements

Results after taking Maca Root supplements are evident on day 4 or day 5. There may be evidence of its benefits on the first and second day of use, but you have to let time do its work. An 80% satisfaction rate has been reported at the end of the first week by many users. That percentage jumps to 90% by the end of the second week.

What Does Maca Root Extract Do?

There are some good benefits from taking Maca Root Extract supplements but let's focus on those benefits that would be of interest to sexually active men and women: Maca Root supplements can:
  • Improve libido levels
  • Help prevent erectile dysfunction
  • Make orgasms fuller and more enjoyable
  • Increases stamina and resistance
Western researchers have long since known that certain herbs used by ancient practitioners in the Far East have helped in improving some sexual dysfunctions. Botanicals such as Maca root are all-natural and usually do not have side effects; a bonus is that they don't require a prescription. Herbal formulations such as Maca supplements are preferred by many over prescription drugs.

Maca Root and Sexual Problems - Improve Erectile Dysfunction

One common complaint of males is that they suffer from erectile dysfunction. Taking Maca Root supplements have lessened the consequences of erectile dysfunction and in some cases, helped treat impotence. One such study to prove this was conducted using a randomized, double-blind clinical trial. Results were published Italian researchers in the April 2009 issue of Andrologia. The researchers are from the Department of Urology of the Morgagni-Pierantoni Hospital, Forli, Italy. The scientists - Zenico T, Cicero AF, Valmorri L, Mercuriali M, Bercovich E - said:

"We carried out a double-blind clinical trial on 50 Caucasian men affected by mild erectile dysfunction (ED), randomized to treatment with maca dry extract, 2400 mg, or placebo. After 12 weeks patients taking maca experienced a more significant increase in sexual satisfaction than those taking placebo. Our data support a small but significant effect of maca supplementation on subjective perception of general and sexual well-being in adult patients with mild ED."

A second study, this time to prove that Maca Root can potentially reverse SSRI induced sexual dysfunction was conducted by scientists working at the Department of Psychiatry, Massachusetts General Hospital. Findings were published in the 2008 Fall issue of CNS Neuroscience Therapy by Dording Christina M, Fisher L, Papakostas G, Farabaugh A, Sonawalla S, Fava M, Mischoulon. The researchers concluded:

"We sought to determine whether maca, a Peruvian plant, is effective for selective-serotonin re-uptake inhibitor SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction. We conducted a double-blind, randomized, parallel group dose-finding pilot study comparing a low-dose (1.5 g/day) to a high-dose (3 g/day) maca regimen in 20 remitted depressed outpatients with SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction. The Arizona Sexual Experience Scale and the Massachusetts General Hospital Sexual Function Questionnaire were used to measure sexual dysfunction. Patients on 3.0 g/day maca had a significant sexual improvement but subjects on 1.5 g/day maca did not. Maca was well tolerated. Maca root may alleviate SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction, and there may be a dose-related effect. Maca may also have a beneficial effect on libido."

Maca Root: Other Studies to Prove its Benefits

With respect to sperm formation, Maca herbs were fed to rats which helped improve sperm formation. Another study concluded that Maca root is good for women in menopause.

On sexual desire: in the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, in Lima, Peru, a 12-week study was conducted among Peruvian males aged 21-56. These men were given 3 grams of Maca. On their eighth week, they had stronger sexual desires. There was no difference in serum testosterone and estradiol levels in both the Maca and placebo groups.

Sperm count and sperm volume: a study was developed for the specific purpose of finding out what potential benefits could be gained by normal healthy men in the 24-44 age group if they took Maca tablets (1500-3000 mg/day) for four months. Their serum luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, prolactin, testosterone and estradiol amounts were measured before and after treatment. After the study, it was found that the males had higher semen volume, more sperm count at each ejaculation and improved sperm motility. Only their serum hormone levels did not change.

Does Maca Root Have any Side Effects?

The rule of thumb is: if Maca supplements are taken as prescribed by either a health care provider or by a manufacturer, and that the recommended dosage is strictly followed, there should be no side effects. Higher than recommended doses could lead to sleeping difficulties (e.g. insomnia).
