Welcome to EarthTurns
By acting as an antioxidant, selenium scavenges free radicals within the body. Free radicals are a major contributing factor to the aging process due to their destructive effect on the cellular level. They can interfere with cell replication leading to mistakes in DNA and RNA copying, deteriorating the quality of cells over time. They can also directly cause the destruction of cells by causing a cascade of free radical damage which ultimately leads to cell death. They can lead to the weakening of bodily structures such as collagen and elastin, making skin appear older and increasing the appearance of wrinkles.
Antioxidants curb the effects of free radicals, eradicating them before they have the opportunity to cause damage to cells and structures. This maintains the systems of the body in good health for longer. Particularly vulnerable are the joints and skin, but the prostate, thyroid and cardiovascular are at risk.
Not only of significance to slow the aging process, selenium is also critical during fetal development. It is also involved in the production of many proteins and structures in the body, including prostaglandins, enzymes and hormones. Selenium deficiencies are known to cause heart problems, infertility, increased cholesterol and poor immune function.
