Natural Shark Cartilage Supplement

Benefits of Shark Cartilage

Before you dismiss a natural shark cartilage supplement as a subject belonging to pseudo-science, ask yourself why there has been so much talk in the last few years about the benefits of shark cartilage, and why clinical studies continue. Shark cartilage supplements have grabbed the attention of health researchers and the benefits that seem to be the focus of continuing evaluation by the medical community reveal that a shark cartilage supplement such as Dee Cee Labs Freeze Dried Shark Cartilage may be something you should investigate.

What is Shark Cartilage?

You know what a shark is but you're probably not aware why its cartilage has sparked the interest of health researchers. There are over 400 species of sharks, some are predator sharks while others aren't. But which species are considered predators has absolutely nothing to do with their health-enhancing properties. The fact that they hardly have any bones gives them absolute freedom of movement and flexibility. These creatures are made mostly of cartilage - something that clues us into why some people would pay money for their cartilage. Cartilage is a kind of tissue that is present in some animals like cows and sharks. Cartilage consists of some substances like mucopolysaccharides, collagen, sulfur, calcium, proteins and others. It is of course this cartilage that has generated keen interest among proponents of dietary supplements and alternative medicine supporters. The main argument for shark cartilage is that given its low molecular weight, it is anti-angiogenic. Angiogenesis generally means the formation of new blood vessels. Shark cartilage is said to be anti-angiogenic; it blocks the formation of tumor-forming blood vessels. Another argument in favor of taking a shark cartilage supplement is that it inhibits metalloproteinase. According to the online medical dictionary of the National Cancer Institute, metalloproteinase means "enzymes that can break down proteins, such as collagen, that are normally found in the spaces between cells in tissues (i.e., extracellular matrix proteins)." They are called metalloproteinase because these enzymes need zinc or atoms to function properly.

Why is Shark Cartilage So Important for Health?

In addition to its anti-angiogenic and metalloproteinase capabilities, researchers have also uncovered the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory elements in shark cartilage. This explains why people have decided to supplement with shark cartilage. Those who have been taking shark cartilage supplements for a long time say that their immune system has improved; for people with osteoarthritis, taking shark cartilage supplements has significantly reduced pain and swelling. But perhaps the most interesting reason for this surge in interest is the anti-cancer promise brought about by shark cartilage, echoing the widespread belief that sharks don't get cancer. When the news first came out, people really thought that sharks could never be stricken with cancer; research, however, confirms that some sharks do fall victim to this disease. What is evident is that between sharks and humans, it is humans who get cancer much more frequently. While additional research is needed to prove that shark cartilage prevents cancer, some people who were once diagnosed with cancer and who have supplemented with shark cartilage say that they are now cancer-free. It would be wrong to say that if you took shark cartilage as a dietary supplement, your cancer would disappear. That would be misleading. But it isn't wrong to say that shark cartilage can possibly ward off the deteriorating effects of cancer. Possibly. If some people are now cancer-free because they took shark cartilage supplements for many years, that should dispel any notion that shark cartilage is just hogwash.

What is also true is that sharks rarely get malignant tumors. Another important point: for more than 30 years, scientists have been studying and trying to establish a correlation between cartilage from sharks/ bovine and cancer. If these studies continue to this day, there's a strong chance that a correlation just might be found. Otherwise, studies would have been stopped long ago because this type of research would be regarded as an exercise in futility. Glimmer of hope? Definitely. The quest continues, happily.

Known Properties and Benefits of Shark Cartilage

  • Anti-pain, Anti-inflammatory - sufferers of osteoarthritis take shark cartilage supplements and report diminished pain. This may be due to the cartilage decreasing the intensity of inflamed joints by making them more fluid. Shark cartilage is being touted as helping to prevent joint dysfunction.
  • Anti-tumor Formation - when the growth of new blood vessels is stopped, that translates into the cessation of tumor formation. This is explained by the fact that tumors receive oxygen making them grow and spread. But the only way they can get oxygen is from blood vessels and not from any other source. Shark cartilage, researchers say, contain elements that help inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Blood flow to tumors is cut off, making these tumors shrink and at the same time protecting healthy cells surrounding them.
  • Relief for Skin Symptoms - diseases of the skin like psoriasis are potentially limited when shark cartilage is used. When unhealthy, skin tends to thicken and shed, and also exhibit redness and swelling depending on the nature of the skin disorder. Shark cartilage supplements have been known to slow down the formation of capillaries (blood vessels) that lead to skin problems.
  • Boosts Immune System - what do health experts recommend to boost your immune system? Common recommendations include increasing your intake of vitamins and minerals like calcium and protein especially when you can't prepare nutritious meals because of lack of time. Two substances to boost the immune system that shark cartilage contains are proteins and calcium. If a person takes shark cartilage as a dietary supplement, then that person is filling his nutrition quota, provided of course that he consumes a fair share of calcium and protein from natural sources like milk, meat, nuts and other foods. Taking a shark cartilage supplement alone will NOT replenish your calcium and protein levels. Note too that shark cartilage also contains what scientists call mucopolysaccharides. These are long chains of sugar molecules found in bodily fluids and in joints according to the US National Library Medicine and the National Institutes of Health.

Shark Cartilage Research

The US government has conducted clinical trials on shark cartilage. When we say clinical trials, we don't mean one or two, but four - so far. From the clinical trials government web site, these were the trials conducted during the period 2000-2009 (there were other studies prior to this period):
  • Shark cartilage in treating patients with advanced colorectal and breast cancer
  • AE-941 in treating patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma
  • AE-941 in treating patients with metastatic kidney cancer
  • Combination chemotherapy plus radiation therapy with or without AE-941 in treating patients with stage III non-small cell lung cancer that cannot be removed by surgery.
While some of the studies are inconclusive and still ongoing, it is clear that if shark cartilage wasn't worth a closer look, the US government would not fund such trials. Since the 1970s, trials numbered about a dozen in the US; we're not sure if similar studies or trials were conducted in other countries. Out of curiosity, we did a search on "database for shark cartilage" and a company in Stockton, California maintains a database called "natural medicines comprehensive database" which contains a full monograph on shark cartilage. It provides safety ratings, effectiveness ratings, interaction ratings, and other useful information. Unfortunately, it is available only by a paid subscription. But this monograph should shed more light and perhaps convince people of the strong potential of a shark cartilage supplement as a health supplement to treat some serious diseases like cancer and osteoarthritis.

Dee Cee Labs Shark Cartilage supplement is a freeze dried shark cartilage supplement that is made in America to assure quality and safety.
