Our data support a small but significant effect of maca supplementation on subjective perception of general and sexual well-being in adult patients with mild ED."

A second study, this time to prove that Maca Root can potentially reverse SSRI induced sexual dysfunction was conducted by scientists working at the Department of Psychiatry, Massachusetts General Hospital. Findings were published in the 2008 Fall issue of CNS Neuroscience Therapy by Dording Christina M, Fisher L, Papakostas G, Farabaugh A, Sonawalla S, Fava M, Mischoulon. The researchers concluded:

"We sought to determine whether maca, a Peruvian plant, is effective for selective-serotonin re-uptake inhibitor SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction. We conducted a double-blind, randomized, parallel group dose-finding pilot study comparing a low-dose (1.5 g/day) to a high-dose (3 g/day) maca regimen in 20 remitted depressed outpatients with SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction. The Arizona Sexual Experience Scale and the Massachusetts General Hospital Sexual Function Questionnaire were used to measure sexual dysfunction. Patients on 3.0 g/day maca had a significant sexual improvement but subjects on 1.5 g/day maca did not. Maca was well tolerated. Maca root may alleviate SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction, and there may be a dose-related effect. Maca may also have a beneficial effect on libido."

Maca Root: Other Studies to Prove its Benefits

On sexual desire: in the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, in Lima, Peru, a 12-week study was conducted among Peruvian males aged 21-56. These men were given 3 grams of Maca. On their eighth week, they had stronger sexual desires. There was no difference in serum testosterone and estradiol levels in both the Maca and placebo groups.

Sperm count and sperm volume: a study was developed for the specific purpose of finding out what potential benefits could be gained by normal healthy men in the 24-44 age group if they took Maca tablets (1500-3000 mg/day) for four months. Their serum luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, prolactin, testosterone and estradiol amounts were measured before and after treatment. After the study, it was found that the males had higher semen volume, more sperm count at each ejaculation and improved sperm motility. Only their serum hormone levels did not change.

Does Maca Root Have any Side Effects?
