The Mediterranean olive or olea europa has had the interest of scientists and clinicians for many years because of its potent medicinal value. Research suggests that olive leaf extract supplements may be a true anti-viral compound because it appears to selectively block an entire virus-specific system in the infected host. It then appears to offer healing effects not addressed by pharmaceutical antibiotics.
Studies in Israel found the extract was effective against Streptococcus by damaging the cell membrane of the bacteria, and then allowing potassium, phosphorus and glutamate to leak out which disabled the bacteria.
