Description
"The Mediterranean olive or olea europa has had the interest of scientists and clinicians for many years because of its potent medicinal value. In fact, the Bible refers to the olive tree as the ""tree of life"". The olive tree is a resilient tree that produces its own powerful antibiotic substances which it uses to fend off disease causing bacteria, fungi, parasites and insects.
In 1854, a famous article was published in the Pharmaceutical Journal of Provincial Transactions by Hanbury. He stated that, ""decoction of the leaves"" of the olive tree had been found to be extremely effective in reducing fevers due to a severe, and otherwise often fatal, disease that had swept the island of Mytelene in 1843. Then in 1908, Bourquelot and Vintilesco isolated a bitter glucoside from olive leaves and named it oleuropein. Eventually in 1960, scientists from Holland isolated a elenolic acid, which was finally determined to be the chemical component with the greatest activity against infectious microbes. Research suggests that olive leaf may be a true anti-viral compound because it appears to selectively block an entire virus-specific system in the infected host. It then appears to offer healing effects not addressed by pharmaceutical antibiotics.
Studies in Israel found the extract was effective against Streptococcus by damaging the cell membrane of the bacteria, and then allowing potassium, phosphorus and glutamate to leak out which disabled the bacteria.
