Importance of Using a Chemical Free Dish Soap

Chemicals in Dish Soap

Regular dish soaps are jam packed with chemicals. These chemicals can not only cause allergic reactions like burning sensations and trouble breathing, but they can also build up in the human body over time. Some chemicals that remain in the body are sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), phenoxyethanol, and propylene glycol.

SLS is a chemical that is easily absorbed by the body, but is not easily expelled. It builds up in the heart and liver, and overtime it can cause cataracts in adults. In children it can impede proper eye development.

The FDA has stated that phenoxyethanol is a harmful chemical and capable of inducing vomiting, diarrhea, and could possibly damage the central nervous system. The Material Safety Data Sheet has stated that phenoxyethanol is harmful if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin.

Propylene glycol can also damage the heart, liver, and central nervous system, and, besides dish soaps, it is commonly found in anti-freeze.

Of course the chemicals aren't only harmful to people...

The process of recycling water doesn't filter everything out. The chemicals found in dish washing liquids make their way back into the environment. These chemicals can settle in the soil surrounding our houses or make their way into rivers, lakes, and oceans. Phosphates are commonly found in dish washing liquids, and contain phosphorous - a food source for algae. It is imperative to keep phosphorous out of aquatic ecosystems, as only one pound of phosphorous can produce up to 700 pounds of algae. A natural dish washing liquid is a great way to reduce the amount of phosphorous in aquatic systems.

Algae are absolutely important to marine life. However there is a healthy balance, and too much algae can have detrimental effects on the ecosystem. A growth of excess algae reduces the light and oxygen content of the water and alters the pH of the water. The pH becomes more acidic. When aquatic plants don't get the proper amount of light they are unable to complete the process of photosynthesis. It doesn't take long for the plants to die, which disrupts the food chain. Fish that once fed on these plants no longer have a food source and, in addition, many fish die from lack of oxygen. The environmental effects of dish soap are unbelievably dangerous. A natural dish washing liquid is a great way to reduce the amount of phosphorous in aquatic systems.

Natural dish soaps are a wonderful way to cut down on the amount of chemicals that we take in on a daily basis. It is also necessary to recognize that when using regular dish soaps you are also harming the environment. Switch to a natural dish washing liquid today.
