What are Krill?
Most people have only heard about krill and the beneficial effects of krill oil supplements recently. Krill are a small shrimp that are very low on the food chain and have a
lower chance of containing harmful contaminants such as heavy metals
found in larger fish. An interesting fact is that whales consume approximately 8,000 pounds of krill per day.
Why are Krill Oil Supplements So Effective?
Krill oil supplements contain a very important phospholipid that gets the essential fatty acids directly to the cells of the body. You see, regular fish oils do not have this amazing phospholipid which bring the omega 3's directly to the cells, so higher doses are needed to have the same effect. In fact, not only does a krill oil supplement, such as Dee Cee Labs Krill Oil, contain this phospholipid that is not found in regular fish oil, but as mentioned above, it also contains astaxanthin, a very powerful antioxidant. Because of this, you can consume a lower dose krill oil supplement and have the same effect as higher doses of fish oil. Some people have estimated that you can take 20% of the fish oil dosage to have the same effect.
Krill oil contains EPA and DHA as found in regular fish oil. These are the important omega 3 fatty acids that provide health benefits to the body.
Other Benefits of a Krill Oil
- Krill oil is more stable than fish oil - does not require refrigeration
- Studies reveal krill oil more effective for triglyceride and cholesterol support
- Protects eyes with carotenoids
- Omega 3 structure same as fat cells in human body
- No fishy aftertaste
- No burping fish
- ORAC value is 378 compared to fish oil's 8
- Has 300 times antioxidant capacity of vitamins A and E
- Has 34 times antioxidant capacity of CoQ10
- Contains phospholipids, which increase absorption
What Does Krill Research Reveal?
We mentioned that studies reveal that krill oil is more effective than fish oil for triglyceride and cholesterol support. But krill oil supplements can provide other amazing health benefits.
One of the beneficial phospholipids found in krill oil is called phosphatidal choline, which has been shown to support brain and eye health. In addition, a 2003 study revealed the beneficial effects of krill oil over fish oil for the emotional and physical symptoms of PMS.
Another krill oil study showed that individuals taking 300 mg of krill oil per day for 30 days were able to reduce CRP (C-Reactive Protein) by 30.9 percent. CRP is important marker for determining inflammation. No wonder krill oil supplements have been shown to reduce vascular and joint inflammation.
What are the Ingredients Found in Krill Oil?
As mentioned above, probably one of the best features of a potent krill oil supplement is that it contains a very powerful antioxidant called astaxanthin. This is one of the most powerful antioxidants available.
Krill eat enormous amounts of algae that contain astaxanthin and krill are one of the best sources for humans to get astaxanthin. Because of the large quantities of astaxanthin found in Dee Cee Labs Krill Oil, it's a great supplement to help fight inflammation and the effects of free radical damage.
Dee Cee Labs Krill Oil also contains the important phospholipid, phosphatidal choline. The phospholipids help communication between the cells of the body. This makes them very important for brain development. In fact, many doctors recommend choline to their pregnant patients so that the brain development of the baby can be supported.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Omega 3 fatty acids have been in the spotlight for quite some time now. Krill oil supplements contains the two important omega 3's called EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Since the EPA and DHA found in krill oil are located in the phospholipids, absorption is higher than EPA and DHA in fish oil (which is in triglycerides).
Krill Oil as a Source of Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids
It is well known that oily fish provide one of the best sources of balanced omega-3, however there is evidence that consuming krill oil extract can provide additional benefits as well as being a more potent source of omega-3. A huge body of research has confirmed the importance of omega-3 in the diet. Omega-3 is an essential unsaturated fatty acid, which is abundant in certain plants and oily fish. It cannot be synthesized by the body but is necessary for many bodily processes and it is thought that the ideal ratio between it and omega-6, another essential fatty acid, is 1:1. In the USA however the average person consumes omega-6 and omega-3 in a ratio of 20:1, putting their heart and brain health at risk.
Which omega-3 supplement should you choose? There are many omega-3 supplements available to conveniently supplement the diet to bring the ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 closer to the ideal 1:1. Plant sources, such as extracts of flax and hemp seeds, fulfill - on paper at least - the body's daily requirements. However, they do not perform as well within the body as omega-3 extracted from animals because of their ratio of ALA (alpha linolenic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Plants contain mostly ALA, whilst animals such as oily fish contain much higher levels of EPA and DHA. ALA is converted very inefficiently to the more useful EPA and DHA within the body. For most Americans this conversion is made yet more inefficient by their elevated insulin levels; for these reason consuming omega-3 supplements with greater proportions of EPA and DHA gives maximum benefit to the body.
The function of omega-3 in the body
Omega 3 plays a role in almost every function in the body and offers many health benefits also. It is a major constituent of cell membranes (called the 'phospholipid bi-layer') and is heavily involved in modulating cell signaling, which is the way that cells talk to each other. The phospholipid cell membrane controls many aspects of the internal workings of the body such as hormone levels, inflammatory processes, the expression level of genes and many other feedback processes. By allowing these signaling molecules to enter and exit cells, omega-3 essential fatty acids are absolutely crucial to a healthy body.
Why Krill Oil?
A recent study in the scientific journal Lipids showed that krill oil can be 48 times more potent than fish oils as well as being more resistant to perishing and diminishing in antioxidant levels. This perishing leads to increased free radical levels, which can harm the body by causing cell damage and premature ageing. Krill oil, as well as containing much higher levels of antioxidants than fish oils, also contains astaxanthin which is considered to be one of the most potent naturally occurring antioxidants. It is also abundant in phospholipids in the form that is present in the body's cell membranes, so it can be absorbed readily into the body and brain giving fast effecting benefits. As well as this, phospholipids are a major constituent of HDL (high density lipoprotein), known as the good cholesterol.
From an ecological perspective, harvesting krill is a much more sustainable practice than fishing. Most oily fish populations are already depleted due to over-fishing, as well as being generally higher in proportions of heavy metals such as mercury and these can pose serious damage to the body. Krill are found in largest number in remote parts of the oceans and such are not exposed to the same levels of heavy metals. They are also lower in the food chain so do not accumulate the levels of heavy metals that larger fish do.
Research Supports Health Benefits of Krill Oil Supplements
An important study done at the University of California in Berkley found that low levels of Omega 3, such as EPA and DHA can cause cognitive decline in humans. Regular consumption of omega 3, especially of EPA and DHA as found in krill oil, can significantly improve cognitive function.
In addition, a study of 30 adults who had attention difficulties such as ADD, revealed a 48.9 percent increase in mental focus and a 46 percent improvement in mental concentration following a 90 day course of consuming krill oil supplements.
Another important finding is that krill oil supplements contain astaxanthin, the powerful antioxidant that has the capacity to cross the blood-brain barrier and eliminate many of the free radicals leading to cognitive impairment.
MemoryOmega-3 essential fatty acids are critical for proper brain function from infant development through to old age. During brain development the brain is forming new connections and memories and nerve cells are growing, a process that is heavily reliant on cell signaling. In addition, nerve cells are surrounded by a fatty sheath that is rich in omega 3 and is essential for transmitting electrical signals across the brain - therefore ensuring that infants have adequate levels of omega-3 in their diet can impact the rest of their lives considerably.
Throughout life the brain continues to develop and therefore making sure that the body has all of the omega-3 it needs in adulthood is also very important. In old age, the brain is at risk of many diseases such as Alzheimer's which is the most common form of dementia. Studies have shown that omega-3 (specifically DHA) leads to improved memory function in old age - the equivalent of being three years younger - which in turn reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Another risk of Alzheimer's disease is due to decreased levels of neuroprotectins, which are derived from DHA. This substance is thought to benefit brain health and nerve cell signaling. The benefits of DHA are also conferred to the genes, in that it is thought to improve DNA copying; it is errors in this DNA copying that can increase in old age, leading to increased risk of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and many forms of cancer.
Cholesterol Health Benefits
A study at McGill University in Montreal revealed that krill oil can help to lower the LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol). This study was conducted with 120 patients who had high cholesterol levels.
The participants of the study were put into one of four groups. Those in Group A were supplemented with .5-1.5 grams of a krill oil supplement per day; Group B was given 2-3 grams of a krill oil supplement per day; Group C was given 3 grams of fish oil per day and Group D was given a placebo.
The findings showed that the participants taking 500 mg of a krill oil supplement per day had a 300 percent improvement in cholesterol levels than those taking 3 grams of fish oil.
A study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition reports that inflammation that causes heart damage can be reduced with a krill oil supplement.
This important study measured CRP (C-reactive protein) levels in the blood, a way to measure the risk of heart damage due to inflammation.
The participants were divided into 2 groups, a placebo group and a krill oil supplement group, who took 300 mg of krill oil.
CRP levels were measured during the study a total of three times. One measurement at the beginning of the study, then in 7 days, and at 14 days. After 7 days, the CRP level of the placebo group increased by 15.7% and at 14 days, it increased again by 32.1%.
After 7 days, the study participants taking the krill oil supplement reduced the CRP levels in their blood by 19.3%. After 14 days, they lowered their CRP by another 29.7%. This is quite remarkable after only 14 days.
The widespread deficiency of omega-3 in the Western diet is thought to contribute to 96,000 deaths annually by leading to a sharp increase in risk of certain diseases. The benefits of krill are thought to be greater than normal fish oil as studies have shown, because they are more effective at reducing fat deposits around the body and regulating hormone levels. Krill contain the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LCPUFA) which is not present in fish oil and is thought to interact with the endocannabiod system which is involved in many processes in the brain such as appetite, pain sensitivity, memory function and mood. In this way it is thought to provide a greater benefit than normal fish oil when reducing the buildup of fat around the heart and liver (around 20% more of a reduction).
Heart disease, obesity and type II diabetes are big problems in the Western world today. An increasing body of research has shown the benefit of omega-3 in reducing fatty deposits around the heart in on the liver which contribute to incidences of stroke, heart attacks and other problems. The reduction in liver fat, as well as heavily reducing the risk of elevated insulin and type II diabetes, makes for a more efficient metabolism, meaning that toxins are broken down and removed from the body quicker.
In another study, conducted by Western University and McMaster University, and reported in the American Journal of Nutrition, it was shown that a krill oil supplement can reduce chronic inflammation and arthritis symptoms.
There were 90 people diagnosed with various inflammatory maladies such as; rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and cardiovascular disease. Following the study, the participants taking the krill oil supplements reduced their pain by 28.9%, their stiffness by 20.3% and had improved function of 22.8%. The study stated that krill oil "significantly inhibits inflammation and reduces arthritic symptoms within a short treatment period of 7 and 14 days."
Inflammation of tissues of the body is sometimes a necessary part of the healing process, but it can become damaging when it reaches chronic levels as it does in diseases such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Studies have shown that oil from krill is abundant in resolvins and protectins, which are thought to regulate the inflammatory process, to limit the amount of damage that is caused to joints and tissues. It was found that taking krill oil lead to a reduction in inflammation, as well as a reduction in the associated symptoms of pain, stiffness and functionality.
Mental HealthOmega-3 has been shown to benefit a variety of mental illnesses including depression and schizophrenia. By improving cognitive function and memory, it is likely to delay the onset of schizophrenia. It is also thought to be linked to mood, as a study in depressed women showed reduced levels of omega-3 in the blood. This study showed that omega-3 is an effective treatment of depression. Many other conditions are known to be affected positively by omega-3, including autism and dyslexia.
AgeingTelomere shortening is something that results in errors in cell copying and hence the advancing of the ageing process. Telomeres are present on chromosomes, where DNA is stored and are thought to become shorter with each cell division. Studies following patients with stable coronary heart disease have shown that telomere length changes least with high blood levels of DHA and EPA. As well as this telomeres are very susceptible to free radical damage. The high levels of DHA and EPA present in krill, as well as their strong anti inflammatory effect, mean that they have a real and potent anti ageing effect if taken regularly. This research, as well as having implications for healthy people looking to protect their body inside and out from the effects of ageing, free radicals, mental illness and inflammatory diseases, provides a safe yet effective supplementary treatment for many serious ailments.
Dee Cee Labs Krill Oil supplement with Astaxanthin is made in America to ensure quality, purity and safety.
