What is homocysteine?

Homocysteine is an amino acid found in the blood. How is homocysteine related to cardiovascular risk? Too much homocysteine is related to a higher risk of coronary heart disease & stroke. There is substantiating evidence that homocysteine may promote atherosclerosis (fatty deposits in blood vessels) by damaging the inner lining of arteries and promoting blood clots. There has not been a direct causal link found yet.

How does Homocysteine Protectors affect homocysteine levels?

The ingredients in Homocysteine Protectors; folic acid and other B vitamins help break down homocysteine in the body. Dietary folic acid and vitamins B-6 and B-12 have the greatest effects. There have been several studies that found that higher blood levels of B vitamins are somewhat associated to lower concentrations of homocysteine.

Controlling Homocysteine with Vitamins and Betaine

The benefits of supplementation with Homocysteine Protectors with vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid in patients with homocystinuria (an increased level of homocysteine) has been reported by many groups of investigators. It appears that serum homocysteine levels tend to correlate inversely with serum levels or dietary intakes of these vitamins in the general population. In other words, the lower your vitamin B6, B12 and folic acid intake is, the researchers found that you are likely to have higher levels of homocysteine. This seems to explain why low serum levels of folic acid or vitamin B6 have been shown to be cardiovascular disease risk factors.

Among regular users of supplemental vitamins, average serum homocysteine is reported to be about 1.5 micromolar lower than in those who do not supplement, which corresponds to an approximate 15% reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.

High intakes of betaine (6 grams or more daily) have been used successfully to treat genetic homocystinuria in humans. Betaine appears to convert the homocysteine to methionine, thereby reducing homocysteine levels in the blood. Dr. N. Dudman and his colleagues gave 840 mg of betaine, twice daily and they reported reductions of homocysteine in the blood of about 30%. Supplementation with vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid, as well as betaine, can possibly, through their influence on homocysteine levels, help reduce the risk of heart disease and other vascular diseases.
