Glucosamine Chondroitin, MSM & SAM-e by Dee Cee Labs
Benefits of Glucosamine
Glucosamine is needed to form glycosaminoglycan and hyaluronic acid molecules which are the main constituents of joint cartilage. It is the joint cartilage that is damaged from osteoarthritis. Glucosamine sulfate may help protect joint cartilage by limiting the breakdown and helping to build up levels of cartilage.
Glucosamine
has been shown to stimulate chondrocytes (cartilage cells) to support
cartilage and collagen. Glucosamine also enters the joint space and is
incorporated into proteoglycans, which are cells that form large
structures and attract water to the joint space for lubrication of cartilage during movement.
When you take a glucosamine supplement it may help to relieve the pain, stiffness, and swelling of osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disorder that affects 12% of the population. In addition, rheumatoid arthritis sufferers also report improvements with glucosamine supplements.
There
is no natural food source of glucosamine, however, the shells of crabs,
shrimp and oysters do contain it, and this is the source of most of the
dietary supplements.
Benefits of Chondroitin SulfateStudies
have shown that chondroitin sulfate supplements appears to block the
enzymes that can destroy essential cartilage tissue. Chondroitin has
become a popular dietary supplement for the treatment of osteoarthritis
because combined with glucosamine it has been shown to be very
effective. In fact, some studies point out that it is as effective as
aspirin and other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) at
relieving arthritis pains and
of course with much less risk of causing stomach bleeding or ulcer
formation. Thousands of people die a year from taking these NSAID
medications (such as Advil and Nuprin).
In the mid-1990s,
scientists discovered that chondroitin is actually well absorbed and
because of promising follow-up research in people suffering from
osteoarthritis both the American College of Rheumatology and the
European League Against Rheumatism were prompted to recommend
chondroitin in their published guidelines for osteoarthritis treatment.
Both chondroitin and glucosamine are much safer to take than medications such as aspirin or NSAIDs.
Benefit of MSM in Joint HealthMethylsulfonylmethane (MSM) supplements
have been shown to help strengthen joints, improve blood flow and
mobility. Many people with arthritis have found that taking MSM
combined with herbal remedies and their medication is more effective
than taking their medicine alone. Many studies have revealed that MSM combined with Glucosamine and Chondroitin works great for those suffering with joint pain.
SAM-e Research for Joint DiscomfortA report issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality concludes that SAM-e is effective for joint discomfort. The Arthritis Foundation, a mainstream advocacy group, recently said its medical experts were satisfied that SAMe provides pain relief but not that it contributes to joint health.
The evidence that SAM-e can repair cartilage
is admittedly preliminary, but it's intriguing. When German researchers
gave 21 patients either SAMe or a placebo for three months, using MRI
scans to monitor the cartilage in their hands, the SAM-e recipients
showed measurable improvements. Entitled 'S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine for
Treatment of Depression, Osteoarthritis, and Liver Disease,' the report
conducted a search of the published literature on the use of SAM-e
within several areas and, on the basis of that search, evaluated the
evidence for the efficacy of SAM-e. Of the studies measured, 10 were
included in a meta-analysis of the efficacy of SAM-e to decrease joint
discomfort. The data indicated that SAM-e is more effective than placebo and that it was shown to be equivalent to standard therapy, according to the scientific review.
