Fish Oil Supplements and Diabetes
Take your fish oil supplement every day. Your heart and brain will thank you, and emerging evidence also shows that fish oil may help to promote healthy blood sugar levels. For many, blood sugar fluctuations are drastic throughout the day, and this can potentially be very dangerous. As the American diet continues its downward nutritional trend, the number of those with diabetes has risen. Diabetes has emerged as the seventh leading cause of death in America, but taking a fish oil supplement may help.
A study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that supplementing with fish oil could help to limit the development of diabetes. Fish oil is believed to boost levels of an important hormone, adiponectin, within the body. Adiponectin is important for the regulation of blood sugar, weight, and cholesterol. It helps to support a healthy appetite, and low levels of adiponectin have been linked to obesity, especially in children. A lack of adiponectin could lead to insulin resistance, and this can cause blood sugar levels to skyrocket. Type 2 diabetes may follow prolonged periods when adiponectin is low, and research has shown that low adiponectin can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes in those that are insulin resistant. The study was conducted at the School of Public Health at Harvard University. Previous animal studies had shown that fish oil helped adiponectin, but its effects on the human body were unknown. The study tested over 1200 people, 682 of which were given fish oil and 642 were given a placebo. The study showed that supplementing with fish can help to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Vitamin E, which can be found in many fish oil supplements, may also provide adiponectin with support.
If you're having trouble regulating your blood sugar you're at risk for diabetes. One way to help manage your blood sugar is with a fish oil supplement. Fish oil can help to manage adiponectin levels within the body, and this may help to promote healthy blood sugar levels and normal weight.
