What Exactly is Dead Sea Mud?
On the border between Jordan and Israel and located at more than 1,300 feet (400 meters) below sea level, the Dead Sea occupies an interesting part of the world's geography and history. Though it is only a short distance south of the Sea of Galilee, the Dead Sea does not play a major role in nearly as many passages of the Bible. Instead, the history of the Dead Sea revolves around the very high salt content of that body of water. The water is more than one-third salts, making it among the saltiest large bodies of water in the world. These salts have directly contributed to the rich minerals and other nutrients found in the muds on the banks of the Dead Sea, which mankind has used for their associated health benefits for millennia.
Among other essential minerals, the waters and mud of the Dead Sea have relatively high concentrations of magnesium, calcium, potassium, chlorides, sulfur and more than 20 other minerals. This means that since well before holistic healing spas became popular vacation destinations, people have flocked to the Dead Sea to engage with the powerful mud associated with it. Ancient texts indicate that even the Bronze Age people of more than 5,000 years ago knew about the potential of these materials. The treatments that have been derived from the Dead Sea now also include salts, but it is by far the mud that is the more popular and beneficial of the two types of treatments. Dead Sea mud is readily accessible on the shores of the sea, and now more than ever can be shipped around the world to benefit a wider variety of people who are unable to travel to Israel.
One reason why the Dead Sea mud have such a positive impact on overall health is the low elevation of the sea. Some health experts argue that by being closer to the core of the Earth, the area around the Dead Sea has a higher concentration of heavier minerals which sank towards the core of the planet when it was formed in the distant past. These higher mineral levels are more easily absorbed by the body, and can go from the skin into the blood stream to help resolve a number of health concerns. The most famous of these cures is the ability of the mud to help prevent or even reverse signs of aging in the skin. The minerals in Dead Sea mud are a unique mixture that revives the cells in the lower layers of the skin, leading to healthier, younger looking skin over the long term. The benefits of using Dead Sea mud can even include the reduction or elimination of sun spots and wrinkles.
Other health benefits of Dead Sea mud are more medical in their nature. Dead Sea mud can aid in the treatment of many diseases including psoriasis, eczema, and even joint pain. Dead Sea mud is also helpful to people with increased levels of stress, which can be reduced as a result of the soothing effects of the application of the mud on the skin. The mud of the Dead Sea is a powerful health-related substance that can be used in a number of applications to improve both the skin and overall health.
