Astaxanthin is known to have a powerful antioxidant effect upon many different areas of the body, including the central nervous system (including the eyes) and skin.
Astaxanthin is a vibrant red colored carotenoid (similar to vitamin A) and is found in large supply in certain sea algae. It is also abundant in the fish and crustaceans that feed on these algae, such as salmon and shrimp, and this is what gives them their bright pink coloration. Oxidative Stress and Astaxanthin
The antioxidant properties of Astaxanthin have recently been publicized in the scientific journal Phytotherapy Research, in which an experiment into its effects upon oxidative stress has been carried out. Oxidative stress occurs as a result of many medical ailments such as cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes. It is also however a very commonplace occurrence in obesity and it is known to damage the body by increasing the production of free radicals and other reactive species which disrupt and destroy cells and interfere with their replication. This can lead to premature ageing and the degradation of organ and bodily function, leaving to a quicker onset of age-related problems as well as obesity-related health issues.
Recent research shows the remarkable effects of Astaxanthin.
The experiment, carried out at the Seoul National University, showed that administering a high-grade Astaxanthin supplement for just three weeks resulted in a marked decrease of oxidative stress and a significant increase in antioxidant activity in a group of young obese subjects. By measuring the levels of various markers of oxidative stress, such as reactive species malondialdehyde (MDA) and isoprostane, researchers found a marked decrease in oxidative stress - between 35 and 65 percent in those taking Astaxanthin supplements. By measuring the plasma levels of antioxidant enzymes they also noted a significant increase of antioxidant activity, of over 190 percent. This was a remarkable result given the short time frame of the experiment.
