Fundamental Potassium

Chelated Potassium Supplement - Highly Absorbed Potassium

Importance of Potassium In Health

Potassium is one of life's most precious minerals. A potassium supplement is important for the heart, kidneys and other internal organs to work optimally.

To start, a chelated potassium supplement such as Fundamental Potassium can help to control water balance, maintain safe levels of acidity, and maintain blood pressure. It works by linking itself to both the electrical and cellular functions in the body. Also known as an electrolyte (sodium and chloride also share this distinction), it works by attaching itself to cells in the body to regularly electric charge and the flow of water molecules within the cell membranes. Potassium is the primary positively charged ion located within cellular fluids while sodium works as a primary positively charged ion in external (outer cell) fluid.

Importance of Potassium

Potassium works by restoring water balance into the cells and regulate the flow of nerve impulses. Drops or peaks in potassium levels are very important. It helps to balance both muscle and nerve operation as well as assist in maintaining critical metabolic processes. For example, irregularities in blood serum potassium levels help to provide a diagnosis on heart rhythm, kidney function, and neuromuscular problems.

Which Foods Contain Potassium?

Dieticians recommend a diet rich in fruit, legumes, and vegetables (high levels of potassium!) to keep the heart pumping at optimal strength. Healthy diets naturally provide enough potassium levels to get by. However, many people have imbalanced diets. Processed foods are a primary culprit, as they naturally deplete foods of their nutritional content; potassium included.

The risks of a low potassium diet include a risk in heart disease, stroke, cancer, digestive problems, infertility, and high blood pressure. Doctors often prescribe a potassium supplement to prevent many of these problems.

Causes of potassium deficiencies are the following conditions:

  • Use of certain medications, such as birth control pills and diuretics
  • Intense, tough labor work
  • High athletic strain
  • Digestive absorption problems (Crohn´s disease is a classic example)
  • Eating disorders
  • Smoking -
  • Drug and alcohol abuse

Benefits of Potassium

Potassium is critical in delivering stability to stabilize blood pressure and regulate water content in cells. This important mineral also helps to maintain steady nerve impulse flow, aid digestion, regulate heartbeat, and improve muscle contraction. Muscle and nerve function is properly maintained and metabolic processes are kept consistent. In addition, potassium helps to regulate both water and acid-base balance in the tissues and blood. Heart rhythm irregularities, kidney function disorders, and neuromuscular disorders are often diagnosed with blood serum potassium levels.

A low level of potassium in the body is not the norm. Significant drops occur due to fluid loss as a result of vomiting, sweating, and diarrhea. People who take diuretics or who suffer from a rare endocrine disorder such as Fanconi´s syndrome or Liddle´s syndrome are also affected. Symptoms of this condition include irregular heart rhythms, muscle fatigue and twitching and in the worst case, paralysis.

A combination of short-term maladies including both vomiting and diarrhea causes irregular potassium levels can be parried without any need for potassium supplements (the body can effectively recover on its own). However, bouts of diarrhea lasting more than 24 hours or that transition into dehydration can result in increased drops of potassium levels, which needs more urgent attention. More common is a low potassium level due to an imbalance of electrolytes in your body (related to low sodium levels) To take advantage of potassium's full effects, doctors suggest that intake of potassium should be increased about five times the level you take sodium.

This is Scientific But Interesting - Potassium Sodium Balance

Potassium works alongside sodium to keep the body´s water balanced. They are both the cations needed for osmotic pressures of fluids within the cell and outside the cell. Sodium, found in extra cellular fluids, is passed along from intracellular fluids to extra cellular fluids through sodium potassium pumps found in the cells. Potassium´s home is intracellular fluid, where it cannot be measured. The cell membrane helps to move potassium, which is used to measure cardiac and neuromuscular excitability. The changing ratio of intracellular fluid potassium to extra cellular fluid potassium helps to measure membrane potential. Sodium and potassium work together to prevent hypertension in individuals with sensitivity to high sodium intake. Lots of potassium may force more sodium to be flushed from the body. Nerve function is helped by the osmotic gradient of potassium moving in between both intracellular fluid and extracellular fluid. Repolarizing the cell membrane to rest after an action occurs is spearheaded by potassium.

Potassium is also a champion at maintaining normal muscle function in both voluntary and involuntary muscles. Muscles of the arms and hands classify as a voluntary muscle while the heart and intestines classify as an involuntary muscle. Muscle contraction and potassium work hand-in-hand in that fluid and electrolyte balance in body cells is effectively maintained.

Nerve impulses and extracting energy from protein, fats, and carbohydrates during metabolic function is also aided by potassium. Low levels of potassium can cause heart problems, including but not limited to heart attack and even death.

Why take a Potassium Supplement?

Foods rich in potassium can give you enough potassium to avoid taking a potassium supplement. According to medical research, potassium is effective at preventing heart disease and stroke. Even one meal high in potassium content is proven to lower the risk of stroke by nearly 50%. The problem is, many of us do not eat the right foods on a daily basis. Because of this, taking the best chelated potassium supplement is important. In another research study, researchers offered potassium supplements to those with good blood pressure and tracked its high and lows over a period of time. Results showed that potassium supplements helped to reduce the risk of high blood pressure by close to 30%.

Potassium Supplements = High Blood Pressure´s Enemy

Lots of well-funded studies have taken a look at the relationship between blood pressure and potassium intake. There have been obstacles in proving this relationship due to high degree of difficulty in measuring electrolyte consumption, inter-individual variation, and the intake of sodium and potassium changing at the same time. In addition, self reported data is historically biases. However, new evidence shows that taking potassium supplements while decreasing sodium intake helps to lower high blood pressure (it is important to note that sodium's effects have been studied more).

Lots of cross-cultural studies suggest that high potassium intake populations do not suffer from high blood pressure. Trials have been conducted and the results for most proved that a potassium supplement helped to reduce blood pressure for those with both regular blood pressure and high blood pressure. According to an in-depth correlation study between 33 trials, potassium supplements helped to decrease diastolic and systolic blood pressure of 2.0 and 3.1 mm Hg. Countless studies have shown that this effect is greatest with those who have low levels of potassium intake. One larger trial saw similarities in blood pressure reduction between the results of potassium supplementation and many blood pressure medicines.

Potassium lowers blood pressure for many reasons. One of them is how it can excrete sodium. Potassium may also cause vasodilation and lower cardiac sensitivity to angiotensin II and catecholamines while suppressing the level of catecholamines brought up by a spike in sodium activity. Taking a potassium supplement while taking high amounts of sodium can reduce the harmful effects of sodium intake. Both reducing sodium intake while boosting potassium can be additive, since the dietary ratio takes precedence over either total dietary content.

The effects of potassium changes from person to person. In one research study with 8 healthy individuals, two of them showed that their sodium and potassium ratio was correlated with blood pressure while no effect was observed with the remaining subjects. In parallel, a more wide scale study found that close to 50 percent of normo-tensive individuals were sensitive to potassium and sodium intake. The differences in each individual were affected by a combination of age, body type, genetics, and gender. In yet another study, researchers provide 54 individuals suffering from high blood pressure a combination of foods high in potassium with the caveat they eat at least 4 servings a day. Within a year, 4 out of every 5 were able to take in lower doses of high blood pressure medication.

Proper supplementation with a good chelated potassium supplement could reverse the need for blood pressure medication, effectively providing the power of potassium in reducing hypertension.

Potassium - Decreasing Stroke Risk

Potassium supplements may also offers outstanding benefits when it comes to decreasing the risk of stroke. High potassium diets can reduce the incidence of stroke close to 50%. Many studies have controlled for other dietary factors and it has been shown that increased intake of the potassium supplement can reduce stroke. One of the studies conducted lasted 12 years and involved more than 750 individuals. The decreased risk of stroke is shared by both normal blood pressure and high blood pressure individuals and is favored more in males.

Caution: Consult with a physician before taking a potassium supplement if you have any of the following conditions kidney disease, stomach ulcers, Addison´s disease, and/or heart disease. Watch for tingling sensations in your arms and legs, a drop in blood pressure, weakness, confusion, and an irregular heartbeat; these may be symptoms of a potassium overdose.

Unfortunately, the Western diet consumes much more sodium than potassium, which is why health professionals recommend that potassium aspartate supplements be taken as a supplementation.

Fundamental Potassium is a chelated potassium supplement that is potassium aspartate. It is made in America to assure quality and safety.
