"Beta-sitosterol is a phytosterol that comes from plants and has a similar structure to cholesterol. The importance of this is that because of the similar structure, beta sitosterol competes with cholesterol absorption. Phytosterols are found in most plants and thus in foods such as rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils and soybeans. Studies indicate that beta-sitosterol can lower cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of colon cancer, and relieve symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy, a swelling of the prostate that causes men to frequently wake up in the night to urinate and have trouble urinating. Research supports the fact that phytosterols, including beta-sitosterol, can reduce cholesterol levels. Beta sitosterol seems to reduce cholesterol absorption in the intestine by about 50% and may have additive effects with herbs and supplements that also lower cholesterol levels.
